The Erratum

A mathematician finds one small flaw in the universe, far out in the nineteenth decimal. When it is observed, the cosmos does not repair the error — it revises whoever noticed.

As Predicted

The first letter arrived on 14 October 2027. It was 4,213 words long. It identified itself, in its opening paragraph, as a transcription of an electromagnetic burst recorded on the lunar far-side observatory.

The Widening

For forty years the pulsars kept perfect time, and gravity was the one thing you could lean on. Then, on an ordinary Tuesday, the weight of the universe began — very quietly — to let go.

Marrowfield

I came to Marrowfield because of a letter my mother had hidden in a copy of The House of the Seven Gables she kept in her closet, fourth shelf up, behind a hatbox. I was forty-six years old when I found it.

Strata

The Mind known as Polite But Not Entirely Sincere — a General Contact Vehicle of, by now, considerable provenance — had been observing a particular planet for the longer part of two of its centuries, and had developed, in that time, the kind of fond exasperation that human grandmothers in some cultures have been observed to cultivate toward their more inventively self-destructive grandchildren. The planet was tier three; carbon-water; an unimaginative star, an oversized moon, a single sapient species that had achieved spaceflight in the eighteenth century of its current civilizational arc.
