The first person to hear it was a graduate student named David Koh, who was working the overnight shift at the Arecibo Observatory on a Tuesday in November and who, by his own account, was thinking about nothing more significant than whether the vending machine in the break room still had Doritos.

The signal arrived at 2:47 AM. It came from a region of space between the constellations Lyra and Cygnus — empty space, as far as the catalogs were concerned, no known stars, no known objects, just the black nothing between here and there. He resigned the following week. Not dramatically — he completed his term, transferred his committee assignments, and returned to his home in Vermont, where he built furniture and occasionally wrote letters to the editor of the local paper about municipal water quality. When asked by journalists whether the signal had "changed" him, he said: "It didn't change me. It reminded me. There's a difference."

The debate over whether to release the signal publicly lasted four months. The arguments against were predictable: panic, social disruption, religious upheaval, the unknowable consequences of exposing seven billion people to an extraterrestrial stimulus that altered emotional processing. The effects were exactly as described and completely unpredictable. Some people quit their jobs. Some people started new ones. Some people called estranged family members. Some people filed for divorce. Some people planted gardens. A surprisingly large number of people — the data was later estimated at eleven percent — simply sat quietly for a while and then went about their day, changed in some way they could feel but not articulate.

Crime rates dropped. Not dramatically — this was not a miracle. But enough. Enough that the data was noticeable, and enough that researchers spent years arguing about whether it was the signal or simply the shared experience of encountering something larger than themselves.

David Koh left the observatory. He moved to a small town in Oregon, where he taught high school physics and played guitar on his porch in the evenings. He never listened to the signal again — once, he said, was enough. The signal continues to broadcast. No one has identified its source. The music plays on, patient and strange, on a frequency that hydrogen atoms recognize as home. And somewhere between Lyra and Cygnus, in the dark between the stars, something is still singing.

It does not seem to mind whether anyone is listening.

But people are. Every night, in observatories and bedrooms and parked cars and hospital rooms, people tune in and listen to the music that came from nowhere and changed — what? Everything? Nothing?
