Commander Naia Patel descended past the point where sunlight surrenders.
The bathyscaphe Meridian dropped through layers of ocean the way a stone drops through memory — each stratum darker, colder, more alien than the last. At three thousand meters, the last traces of blue vanished. At six thousand, the pressure hull groaned with the voice of a planet squeezing inward. A structure with no sediment on its surfaces was either impossibly young or impossibly clean. The geological dating of the surrounding sediment, conducted over the following weeks, suggested the structure had been placed there approximately four and a half million years ago — before Homo sapiens existed, before Homo erectus existed, during an era when humanity's ancestors were still climbing trees on the African savanna.
Someone had visited Earth's deepest point and left a marker, four million years before the species it was presumably meant for had evolved to find it.

The media oscillated between wonder and terror with the pendulum rhythm of a twenty-four-hour news cycle. Naia sat in the bathyscaphe, her hand still resting on the warm surface of something older than her species, and understood. The obelisk was not a monument. It was not a message. It was a doorbell. And after four and a half million years, someone had finally rung it.
